The Kingdom of Dahomey
The kingdom of Dahomey, located on the western coast of Africa east of the Volta river, between Togo and Nigeria, is now incorporated into southern Benin.[1] The former kingdom was situated about 150-200 miles from the sea and its capital was Abomey. The kingdom, founded by the Fon, were like many other African tribes who passed down their traditions orally. Theirs was a tropical climate that had an abundance of wild life, which kept the local village market stocked with fresh meat and produce.[2]
